2022 Episode 2: A Conversation with Dave Rimington
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
Dave Rimington. That's right, the greatest Center is college football history, and a long-time supporter of the Doc Talk Podcast joins us for a conversation that covers a lot of different topics.
You may or may not know this, but Dave is a brand new man! He's lost over 140 pounds, had both of his knees replaced, and now can walk for miles and miles without any pain.
At one time, Dave thought he wanted to be the Athletic Director at Nebraska. He held the position on an interim basis in 2017. Did he want the job in the summer of 2021 when Bill Moose left? Hell no!
Dave is now retired and looking forward to continuing his traveling and taking photos. As you listen to the podcast, you will hear it in his voice; the one thing he wants the most is to see Nebraska start winning again on the football field. But he knows in the day and age of NIL, winning will come with a price tag, and he wonders if Nebraska and its boosters have enough cash to keep up.
We want to welcome our newest sponsor of the Doc Talk Podcast. Connor Orr, an attorney with Erickson & Sederstrom. Erickson & Sederstrom is a full-service firm providing representation to clients for more than 50 years. They have 28 attorneys with licenses in 7 different states. 2022 Episode 1: How Much Did Casey Thompson Cost?
Saturday Jan 08, 2022
Saturday Jan 08, 2022
Now that we have your attention, let's explain. If you are a Nebraska fan, the good news is that the Huskers finally have a committed quarterback. Former Texas starter Casey Thompson who has two years of eligibility remaining, has said he's coming to Lincoln. His numbers as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns were impressive despite NOT leading Texas to a bowl game. He'll compete with Logan Smothers for the starting position. We would be shocked to start the 2022 season when Nebraska opens up against Northwestern if he's not under center. Signing Thompson is also an indication that Nebraska will be a pass-first offense under new Offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple.
But the day and age of the transfer portal and NIL, Thompson most likely didn't come to Nebraska without some monetary incentive. Yes, it will cost money, sometimes lots of to land big names. Just look at Texas A&M; it's been reported that the Aggies, okay, not the school but the boosters spent $25-$30-million to secure what is considered the best recruiting class in the history of college football. Like it or not, Pandora's Box is now open, and this is what we can expect in college football from here on out.
Dr. Rob tells us how much he thinks it took to get Thompson to come to Lincoln on this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast. It's a significant number but well worth it if he can help turn around a once-proud program that is struggling.

We would love to come to your service club, sports night, fundraiser, church group, you name it, and talk football.
It's not every day that you will get a fat, bald guy from Iowa and a brilliant bald guy who played football at Nebraska and in the NFL to be politically incorrect in front of your friends and family. But, old stories and new stories, nothing is off-limits. So let's make this happen.

Every week, thousands of people from Nebraska, Iowa, the Midwest, and worldwide listen to me and Dr. Rob and our unfiltered conversations and opinions about football, beer, and life.

2021 Episode 27: Recruiting and Gambling
Saturday Dec 18, 2021
Saturday Dec 18, 2021
Two bald guys walk into a bar in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to record a podcast. (Go ahead and finish the joke on your own). It's no joke, as Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice were guests at Barley's in Council Bluffs to record their last Doc Talk podcast of 2021.
Recording in a bar is a lot different than recording in the studio, and over the next hour and twenty minutes, you might think we go in 50-different directions. But, here's what we can tell you, we cover a lot of things, including:
The early signing day and what the "rankings" mean for Nebraska.
Legal sports gambling is not that far away, just across the river and bet with Circa Sports.
Steve Sipple from the Lincoln Journal Star makes his first appearance on the podcast.
We also sit down with the Owner of Circa Sports, Derek Stevens. How does a Michigan man end up owning not one but three casinos? Also, Circa Sports Vice-President of Operations Mike Palm joins us. Although Mike is a big wig in the gambling world, his road to vegas is unique. Undergrad at Notre Dame, teaching at a Catholic middle school and dealing poker. Oh, and he's a Nebraska fan! An interview with Mike turns into Mike interviewing Dr. Rob, and it's classic!
This is our final episode of 2021; what a year it's been! Merry Christmas to you and your family, and Happy New Year! We had a record in listens, thank you! We will keep drinking beer and talking football and whatever else comes to mind in 2022!

2021 Episode 26: New Coaches and Recruiting
Sunday Dec 12, 2021
Sunday Dec 12, 2021
Nebraska has some new names selling its product. Fans are excited to see what new Offensive Coordinator Mark Whipple and Offensive Line Coach Donovan Raiola bring to the Huskers. But, unfortunately, time might not be on their side as it's pretty clear that Scott Frost has one more season to right the Big Red Ship after a 3-9 season and the team's fifth straight without a bowl game.
On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice have a deep conversation about the new assistant coaches and what it means to recruit players. Nebraska's recruiting class is at or near the bottom of the Big 10 Conference if you believe the rankings. For a quicker turnaround to happen, watch the Transfer Portal become a source of proven and unproven talent Nebraska uses to start the rebuild.
Let's be honest. Nobody knows how this is going to play out. When Bill Moos hired Scott Frost and Fred Hoiberg, they have considered grand slam hires. But, unfortunately, both head coaches have failed to live up to their hype, and as Dr. Rob and Travis discuss in this episode, basketball is in a lot worse shape than football!
Do you want to hang out with Dr. Rob and Travis? Join them on Friday, December 17, at Barley's Bar, located at 114 West Broadway in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They will be recording a podcast on location and hanging out with Circa Sports Iowa! Yes, you can legally bet on sports in Iowa, so why not cross the river for some fun? Download the Circa Sports app, fund it and get a free drink and some Circa merch! All the fun starts at 3:00. Dr. Rob and Travis will be on location around 6:00 and start recording their podcast around 7:00.

2021 Episode 25: Welcome Home Mickey
Sunday Dec 05, 2021
Sunday Dec 05, 2021
Mickey Joseph is coming "home" so to speak for the former Nebraska quarterback is hired by Scott Frost to be part of the offensive rebuild at Nebraska. Joesph becomes the highest-paid Nebraska assistant in the history of the program and will be the Associated Head Coach, Passing Game Coordinator, and wide receivers coach. Joesph has spent the last five seasons as an assistant at LSU and is leaving Baton Rouge after Brian Kelly was hired as the Tiger's new head coach. Joesph is known as a solid recruiter which Nebraska will need. However, on this podcast, Dr. Rob Zatechka explains why he's kind of surprised that Joesphy took the job. He also wonders if there good be more to it with Athletic Director Trev Alberts.
The College Football Playoff is set, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, and Cincinnati make up the final four to play for the National Title. Dr. Rob and Travis Justice discuss the final four and what expansion would look like and if it would really help determine who the best team in the country is.
After you listen to the podcast, would you please give it a rating or a review? Why? Well, the more people that like this show, the more people will see it. 2021 Episode 24: There‘s Always Next Year
Saturday Nov 27, 2021
Saturday Nov 27, 2021
There's always next year. Really, what else can you say? Nebraska finishes the regular season 3-9, it's worst since the 1961 season. The only wins the Huskers were able to muster up in 2021:
Fordham
Buffalo
Northwestern
Eight of Nebraska's nine losses were by 8-points or less. This has led many people to say Nebraska is the best 3-9 team in the country. Let's be honest, there is no such thing as 3-9 is just that, 3-9.
Ont this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice talk about the season-ending loss to Iowa and it followed the script for the entire season of disappointment and what-ifs. Yes, there's always next year, but will one more year be enough for Scott Frost? Listen to hear what Doctor Rob has to say.
Additionally, there are a lot of decisions that need to be made by Scott Frost in a short amount of time. He needs to fill the assistant coaching vacancies, Adrian Martinez needs to decide if he's coming back, and oh yes, there's recruiting.

2021 Episode 23: Iowa vs. Nebraska=Travis vs. Rob
Sunday Nov 21, 2021
Sunday Nov 21, 2021
The yearly showdown we wait patiently until the last game of the season for. The Hero's Game as Nebraska takes on Iowa. Or for you regular listeners to this podcast, Rob (Nebraska) vs. Travis (Iowa).
The Huskers have lost five-in-a-row and will not be going to a bowl game. However, Nebraska has been competitive in every one of the five losses and could have won the game in many cases. This includes the most recent loss, 35-28 at Wisconsin on Saturday. Bad special teams, interceptions, and horrendous officiating keep Nebraska fans infuriated.
On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice take friendly shots at each other about this week's game. The early line has Nebraska a 4-point favorite despite having a losing record and Iowa having nine wins.
How about this, a Husker fan that graduated from the University of Iowa. Centris Federal Credit Union President and CEO Steve Swanstrom stops by and tells us how he ended up in Iowa City despite wanting to go to school in Lincoln. Yet, his loyalty has never wavered. We also transition the conversation into the duties of a CEO and how running a large organization is very similar to running a Big 10 football program. There are similarities and as Steve explained, the more you do it, the better you get at it. The difference, coaches in many cases don't have the luxury of time to learn as they go.

2021 Episode 22: Giving Up Play Caling Duties
Sunday Nov 14, 2021
Sunday Nov 14, 2021
One of the many changes in the Husker football program over the past week is the revelation that when Scott Frost hires a new Offensive Coordinator, he will be handing over the play-calling duties to the new OC.
What does Dr. Rob Zatechka think about this change? You will find out by listening to this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy.
We don't talk a lot about the changes on the Husker staff; we covered that last week in a live stream. If you missed that conversation, you can watch it by clicking the link below.

Also, Dr. Rob discusses the loss of JoJo Domann for the remainder of the season and the effect it will have on the last two games of the season, at Wisconsin and home against Iowa.
