Nobody disputes that Nebraska has a superior history than Iowa in the sport of football; not too many teams do. However, when former Nebraska Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst fired Bo Pelini, he did so after Nebraska beat Iowa in 2014. When asked why he fired Pelini after a thrilling overtime win over the Hawkeyes that capped off another nine wine season, Eichorst said he had to evaluate where Iowa was as a program. Since then, the Hawkeyes have won four-in-a-row against the Huskers. 
In this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob and Travis Justice talk about this budding rivalry and what team has the better program right now. The Black Friday showdown proves to be spirited as many on the Hawkeye staff haven't forgotten the words of Eichorst. Nebraska finds itself needing a win to make a bowl game, and the Hawks are trying to finish with nine regular-season wins. 
This Friday has the potential to be a game that provides some excitement.  Nebraska can't afford to turn the ball over against an Iowa team that is stout on defense and held 8 of its opponents to a season-low in points. The Husker are looking to build off of last week's impressive win against a less than impressive Maryland team.

Jonathan Taylor rushed for over 200-yards on Nebraska for the third straight season. We concede he is one of, if not the best running back in college football this year. However, we will go to our grave insisting Taylor could have and should have had a lot fewer yards.
In this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob Zatechka gives his expert diagnosis on Nebraska's ability, or lack thereof to tackle. The problem he says goes straight to fundamentals.
Despite losing its fourth straight game, Dr. Rob does say there is a lot of good that came out of the loss against the Badgers. Enough to build on for the remainder of the season? Only time will tell.

Since the State of Wisconsin is known for its beer, it's only fitting that Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice dive into and Infusion Brewing Company One and Done Series IPA.  This week on the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob and Travis are feeling no pain at the end of this hour-long conversation that covers a lot of topics. 
The first being, how is Nebraska going to stop the Wisconsin running game?  The Badgers lit up an Iowa defense that was supposed to be one of the best in the country. Nebraska has had a week to prepare because they had a bye week, but will that be enough time to put the right game plan together? 
The Big 10 West is officially going through Minnesota. The Gophers have reached this point in just the 3rd season under PJ Fleck. Why the success? Well, we now have to admit he's a pretty good coach and he's a CEO that is not afraid to make a difficult decision like firing an assistant coach when it's not working out. 
We got a lot of listener email, we can't answer all of them but Dr. Rob tells a great story about Dr. Jack Stark and how he noticed something wasn't quite right back in the early '90s and what he suggested made all the difference in the world and most likely led to a National Title or Two. This is the value of having a good sports psychologist on staff.

We seem to have this conversation every year; is this the lowest point Nebraska football as been since before Bob Devaney? That's very debatable, and losing to Purdue last Saturday is undoubtedly embarrassing. It wasn't that the Huskers lost the game; it's the way they looked losing. Throw in the fact that the Boilermaker's third-string quarterback went six for six on the final drive leading them to the win. 
On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob Zatechka, and Travis Justice are drinking some Infusion Brewing Company beer as they try and make sense of what is going on.  Is the defense running the right scheme? Is Adrian Martinez the right guy to be running the offense. Is Scott Frost in over his head in the Big 10? Some of these may sound absurd, but with the possibility of not making a bowl game again, you have to throw everything out there. 
Based on the emails we are getting, fans want changes on defense, and it starts with coaching. Additionally, fans are rightfully upset that there seems to be a lack of discipline, a lack of fire, and sometimes a lack of readiness.

Losing to Indiana might be rock bottom for the Scott Frost era at Nebraska. It's not that the Huskers lost, it's the way they lost. It was uninspired football and a good reason Frost may have called out the effort of this team afterward (he has since apologized). 
In this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, we talk about loyalty. A head coach needs it from his staff and his players, and he must give that same loyalty in return... to a point. When loyalty becomes blind, it can lead to problems that leave a fan base bickering and opposing team continuing to rack up yards, scores, and wins. 
Frost was loyal when he brought all his assistant coaches from Central Florida. He wanted that trust and continuity in his staff as the rebuilding of a once-proud program was again going through yet another overhaul. 
Looking at the results over the past year and a half, is it time to start evaluating that loyalty and consider changes. Football is a business, not personal, and Frost has one job, to win games and compete for championships. The Big 10 is NOT the American Athletic Conference, and some Husker coaches before him were loyal to a fault, and it ultimately met their demise. 
Les Miles has fired an assistant at Kansas already this season, PJ Fleck did the same in the middle of the season last year. Both changes had a positive impact on the programs. Should Frost consider the same? Dr. Rob gives his thoughts.
Also, Dr. Rob came away impressed with Noah Vedral in the game against Indiana. So impressed that he thinks he might be better than Adrian Martinez! So is there a QB controversy in Lincoln? No, but Rob does tell us what he likes about Vedral and Luke McCaffrey over Martinez.

Wow! Even without a game last week we find ourselves with plenty to talk about. Maurice Washington fills up a lot of our conversation this week as he is no longer practicing with the team and his future with the program is very much in doubt. 
Fans love to remember the 90’s, and with Scott Frost, they are hoping for a return of the good old days. Well, is history starting to repeat itself? In this case, we are not referring to winning, but rather, players who make poor decisions put the program’s reputation in jeopardy and still get second and third chances. 
This approach is a slippery slope for Frost, and the way he deals with Washington is something he can’t take lightly. Dr. Rob Zatechka says it best in this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy; coaches hate drama! Washington has provided plenty of it this season, so what’s next? Only time will tell, but Frost indicated that if his sophomore runningback does return to the team, it will not be anytime soon.
So on this episode, we spend some time talking about Washington, Lawrence Phillips, culture, and the balance that coaches have to take when it comes to mentoring student-athletes. 
Oh, and what about Indiana? Nebraska does have a game this week as they take on the Hoosiers. Indiana can score points, but it gives up a lot as well. In addition to the game talk, Dr. Rob and Travis take a lot of listener emails.

Husker fans are not a patient lot. When Scott Frost was hired, some (not all) expected a quick turn around, much like Frost was able to accomplish at Central Florida. It’s safe to say that Nebraska is not living up to those lofty expectations.
On this edition of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss the latest disappointment, a 34-7 loss at Minnesota. Many people agree that the way the Huskers lost to the Gophers might be a new low for the Frost era. Minnesota ran through, over, under, and around the Blackshirts. Racking up 322 rushing yards on 49 attempts, that’s 6.6 yards a carry. 
Dr. Rob has been preaching for over a  year, the turnaround every fan wants is going to take three, maybe four years.  Injuries are starting to mount for Nebraska, and Dr. Rob points out to a major factor in the meltdown, depth, there isn’t any. 
There are a lot of questions from listeners on this podcast; a lot of them revolve around the strength and conditioning program. If the Huskers are bigger, faster, and stronger, then why are the results showing on the field? Well, Dr. Rob has an answer for that as well.
In the last half of the podcast, we get into paying players. If players start making money off of their name and likeness, does that open them up for criticism that they may not have been exposed to before? After all, if a star player is raking in thousands of endorsement dollars, he is no longer just a student-athlete who’s considered a kid between the ages of 18 and 22.
