Practice has started, and the countdown to the season opener is on!
Dr. Rob Zatechka is back from a much-needed vacation and is ready to record weekly from now until the end of the season.
In this episode of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast, Dr. Rob and Travis Justice discuss the expectations of Freshman Quarterback Dylan Raiola. Husker Nation sees the Big Red legacy as the savior who will finally deliver the Huskers back to the promised Land. Is this too much of a burden to bear? Time will tell. Dr. Rob tells us what he would like to see from Raiola regarding his mobility.
How about reducing those dreaded turnovers? Nebraska turned the ball over 31 times in 2023, with 15 fumbles and 16 interceptions. Opponents outscored Nebraska 62-30 on points off of turnovers. They will have to flip the script if they are to get to a bowl game or, even better, win nine games. That starts with the quarterback play, adding even more pressure to the first-year signal caller.
Dr. Rob and Travis also discussed gambling on the podcast. There is a push to get online sports betting to a vote. Right now, you must physically make your sports bets at a casino. Sports betting is a touchy subject with a lot of people, but it's here. You might as well make it consumer-friendly. It's going to happen eventually.

Nebraska athletic director Troy Danned has been in charge of Husker Athletics for four months. Talk about drinking water from a fire hose! The landscape of college athletics is changing almost daily, but the expectations haven't changed. The expectation is to win. 
Troy called the Doc Talk podcast during our live show on the day he was hired. He promised to sit down with us once he got settled in, and he makes good on that promise in this Husker Doc Talk podcast edition. He was not in the basement with a beer but rather in his office in the North Stadium. 
However, the topic of alcohol did come up. Nebraska is now the last team in the Big 10 Conference that does not allow beer sales. Will this change anytime soon? We ask the important question. We also dive deep into the transition of field turf to natural grass, the stadium renovation project, and so much more.

Terry Pettit, one of the greatest coaches in any sport, joins Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka on the latest Husker Doc Talk Podcast.
Pettit retired from coaching in 2000 at the age of 53. His 82% winning percentage ranks 8th on the NCAA's Division 1 All-Time list. Undoubtedly, he would have kept coaching; Pettit's win percentage and total wins would have been at the top or close to it.
Pettit coached Nebraska to its first National Title in 1995. His teams won 18 Big 8 Championships and three Big 12 titles.
Why would a coach seemingly on top of his game, with great teams, fan base, and facilities, walk away at such a young age? Passion, that's why. Pettit loves to write. He didn't set out to be a volleyball coach; he wanted to be a writer. His undergraduate degree was in English, and his Master's was in creative writing.
Today, Pettit lives in Colorado and finds his writing inspiration there. He's published three books, including poems in Trust and the River. He also hosts a podcast, "Inside The Coaching Mind," which you can listen to on TerryPettit.com. In addition to writing and podcasting, Pettit is a sought-after speaker at corporate events about leadership and team building.

The wait is over! The Doc Talk Podcast returns have a short hiatus because of family obligations and vacations.
Our guest on episode 14 is Steve Warren. The Springfield, Missouri native had several colleges to choose from when he was getting recruited. He picked Nebraska for one reason: winning!
After a short NFL career, Warren returned to Nebraska to finish his degree. After that, he stayed here and started the Dream Foundation, coached high school football, and eventually started the Warren Academy.
Steve and his team train the best high school football players in Nebraska and Western Iowa. The goal is to get them to the next level. One of his prize pupils is his son, Braylen. The Omaha Westside quarterback will be a sophomore and already has a scholarship offer from Iowa State. More will follow.

Change is coming, and fast! The NCAA is expected to come to a settlement in the House lawsuit which is expected to have major impact on athletic departments and their budgets. Until official word comes out, ESPN give a good breakdown on what schools will be voting on. 
Not every conference and schools is on board. In typical fashion in today's college athletics landscape, there are the halves and the have nots and that is determined by the all might dollar. The Big East Conference, which of course Creighton is a part has strong objections to the proposal in front of schools that is expected go to a vote soon.  Look at it this way, if you have football and a good TV contract, it will be easier to flip the bill.

The Nebraska Spring Game was a success in many ways. On this episode of the Doc Talk Podcast, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice take a deeper dive into the scrimmage and what there is to build off of heading into Summer workouts and Fall camp. 
Of course, all eyes were on Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola. He performed with poise but he will also be pushed by Heinrich Haarberg and Daniel Kaelin. For the first time in a long time, it appears the Huskers have lots of depth at the quarterback position, something that is a must in today's Big Ten conference and college football.
